It’s the beginning of August and your garden might be looking a little tired from the summer heat. It might be time to REFRESH! Here are some great ideas to wake up your summer garden:
It’s Time for a New Do
Many of your plants may have finished blooming. Start by cutting these back. Spring and early summer bloomers can be cut back to one third their height. If your plants are in bloom right now, take a pair of clippers and deadhead the spent blooms. Once this is done, water your plants with a liquid fertilizer, like English Gardens Bloom Builder, to revitalize the plant to give you more blooms.
Add Some Color
Flowering perennials tend to stop blooming around this time, so add some heat-tolerant annuals to boost the color scheme in your garden. English Gardens has many different summer annuals to choose from for both shade and sunny areas. Some varieties include:
- Begonias
- New Guinea Impatiens
- Gerber daisies
- Supertunias
- Coleus
- Zinnias
- Dahlias
- Lantana
- Geraniums
- Grasses
- Verbena
Look for varieties of fall annuals like pansies, cabbage and kale arriving soon.
Green up the Lawn!
Want a healthy, green lawn? Maybe it’s time to fertilize! Scotts has a wide selection of different fertilizers formulated to different varietie of grass. Want a more organic approach? Try Espoma! Espoma will build the soil and create a healthier lawn, plus it’s organic and safe for kids and pets.
No Excuses
If the hot summer heat is keeping you from working in the garden, here’s a solution: Try working in the morning or late evening. This is a perfect idea for some therapeutic relaxation. Have breakfast, coffee or tea while working in your garden in the morning, or that might be a reason to use your fire pit and plant some container gardens by firelight. If there is a will, there is a way to enjoy garden therapy in the summer.
