Succulents

Succulents are hardy, desert plants that come in a range of sizes, shapes and colors. Plants like Cacti, Aloe, and Jade are all members of the succulent family.  Some varieties flower, while others can change color with the seasons. These plants are used to arid conditions and can handle some neglect, making them a great choice for new plant parents or those with not-so-green thumbs.

Light

Succulents need a lot of light to thrive. Most varieties need about 6 hours of bright light a day. Indirect, or filtered light is best. Be cautious about keeping plants in direct sunlight. Some succulents cannot handle direct light and will scorch. If you are looking to keep your plants outdoors, introduce them to direct sunlight slowly.

Water

Although succulents can handle some drought, they do need regular watering to survive. In the Spring and Summer you may find your plants drying out more quickly. Test the soil by pushing your finger in, and only water when at least half the soil is dry to the touch. Overwatering can kill succulents, so make sure the soil is dry before watering.

When watering your succulents, it is important to water the soil directly. Try to avoid watering the leaves as this can cause them to get brittle and break or cause mold to form.

Fertilizer

Succulents only require a light feeding during the Spring and Summer. Use a half-strength succulent food once a month to keep them looking their best.
