Amaryllis bulbs are popular flowering plants to grow during the holidays. These beautiful, elegant flowers are perfect for enhancing your home in the winter months. They come in bulbs are often sold as kits to make growing them simple. And with the right care, they can re-bloom throughout the year.
Growing in Water
Amaryllis like a tight-fitting container and one that will keep the plant upright after blooming. So selecting something that has a heavier base is best. Most kits will come with a specially designed vase for growing Amaryllis so the bulb will be held above the water. Once you find your container, fill it halfway with rocks or stones. Place your Amaryllis bulb root side down on top of the stones. Fill the container with water until an inch below the bulb tip. Do not let your bulbs sit in the water, this will cause rot.
Growing in Soil
To start, select a container with drainage holes. Amaryllis bulbs are typically 4 inches in diameter, so a 6-inch pot will give be a good fit. Fill the container halfway with a light potting mix. Place your Amaryllis bulb in your soil root side down. Add soil until 3/4 of the bulb is covered. Water thoroughly.
Light
Place your bulbs in a warm, sunny spot. Providing bottom heat, like on top of a radiator, will help them bloom more quickly.
Water
When first planted, water your bulbs sparingly. After a few weeks when a sprout appears, water more often. Do not over. Amaryllis bulbs do not like to sit in water.
Extend the life of your Amaryllis blooms by a week or more, by snipping them off the bulb and placing them in a vase with water.
