Fall is the time to prepare your garden and plant spring flowering bulbs. Prevent Bambi from snacking on your bulbs, before they even bloom, by choosing varieties that are deer resistant. Darrell Youngquest, English Gardens Fall Harvest & Bulb Buyer, suggests his favorite bulbs that deer and rodents will avoid.  

Allium

Widely sought after for their lollipop-like shape, Allium is deer and rodent resistant. They bloom in late spring and prefer full sun and well-drained soil. “Some of the most popular varieties English Gardens will be carrying this fall include Giganteum and Gladiator,” exclaims Darrell.

Daffodil

One of the easiest bulbs to grow, Daffodils are a timeless spring bloom. “Although most gardeners recognize the classic yellow or crème Daffodil, there are also beautiful white varieties such as Avalon,” explains Darrell. Besides their beautiful display of color, Daffodils are deer and rodent resistant. They prefer full sun to partial shade.

Crocus

Crocus provide the earliest color of all blooms. They typically bloom cup-like flowers in early spring, when the soil has just begun to warm. Crocus are very versatile and can be utilized as ground cover or as the focus of your garden. “There is such a wide variety of Crocus that range in color from bright purple, such as Spring Beauty, to striking orange, such as the Orange Monarch,” says Darrell. Similarly to Daffodils, Crocus can grow in full sun to partial shade.

Hyacinth

With an overwhelming scent, Hyacinths have blue, white, purple or yellow flowers that bloom in tight clusters. Why choose just one color? “English Gardens carries the Soul Sister mix which allows gardeners to achieve a mix of purple, pink and white flowers!” They require well-drained soil and should be planted in full sun or part shade.

Interplant

Spring-flowering bulbs, such as Tulips, are coveted among deer and rodents. Plant Tulips and other bulbs among perennials and annuals that are deer resistant. This may help deer from browsing on your bulbs. For a complete list of deer resistant plants, read more here.
