When the weather starts to warm, gardeners start itching to dig in the dirt outside. However, there are still opportunities to enjoy plants indoors. Meg Gallagher, English Gardens House Plant Buyer, shares her favorite house plants for the spring season.
Starfish Sansevieria
“This plant makes me laugh,” says Meg. “It’s so unusual and fun — a real conversation piece.”
The Starfish Sansevieria is one of the top plants to purify the air. It’s a rare house plant that prefers bright, indirect light. Water only when the soil is dry.
Bromeliads
“This plant screams the tropics,” says Meg. “I love it because bromeliads provide months and months of color. Plants have a wide variety of brightly colored flowers and foliage.”
Bromeliads are low-maintenance plants, highly tolerant of fluctuating temperatures and drought. Place in bright, direct light. Water when the soil is dry to the touch and mist occasionally to create humid conditions.
Bamboo Palm
Bamboo plants are the perfect decor plant, according to Meg. “They look great in any decorating style, and are a very classic plant.”
Rated one of the best house plants to purify the air indoors, the Bamboo Palm is very low maintenance. It grows best in direct, bright light. Water when the surface of the soil feels dry.
ZZ Plant
“This plant is one of my favorites because it is so easy to maintain,” says Meg. “It actually thrives on neglect. It is perfect for people who forget to water.”
ZZ Plants are great additions to small apartments or offices. The ZZ Plant prefers low light and water when the soil is dry. Do not let your plant sit in water, as this can cause root rot.
Sansevieria Superba
“I love the bright gold edging and its upright growth pattern,” says Meg. “This plant is the perfect size for a book shelf or coffee table! This houseplant will provide years of enjoyment because it adapts to many conditions and is so easy to maintain.”
This Sansevieria variety prefers bright, indirect light.
