We love spring and the beautiful plants that feature a seasonal show. Here are a few of our favorites.
Dogwood Trees
Dogwood trees are a great addition to most gardens. They flower in the spring with flowers in white, red or pink, depending on variety. They are a versatile tree that can be grown in the shade or sun, although they do prefer a partial shade.
Dogwood trees can grow 15 to 30 feet tall and just as wide. In the fall they have vibrant red/purple fruit, making this a great addition to bring birds into your yard. The leaves also turn a magnificent sunburst orange, making dogwoods a great multiple-season tree.
Crabapples
There are few trees or shrubs that approach the beauty of a crabapple tree in full bloom. Crabapples are prized for their foliage, flowers, fruit, and variations in size and habit.
By using different varieties, the flowering period can be extended from early May to early June, with colors ranging from white through purplish red. The small fruits, borne in the fall, are also effective, with colors of red, yellow, and green. Other features of Crabapples are their small size (most less than 25 feet in height) and the variation in growth habit (rounded, horizontal, pendulous, and vase shaped).
Fothergilla
Fothergilla is a compact, slow-growing, deciduous shrub that typically grows two to three feet tall and wide. It flowers with dense terminal bottlebrush-like spikes about one to two inches long, and blooms in April and early May before the leaves appear. Its fall color is a bright red-orange that is destined to catch the eye from a distance. With beautiful flowers in the spring, vibrant green summer foliage, and a magnificent fall color, Fothergilla is a wonderful shrub to incorporate into your landscape.
