English Gardens Landscape Designer Carolyn Berwick has worked at English Gardens for five years.

She started as a summer intern and worked in various positions, including administrative assistant before she was promoted to a designer in January 2016. She’s been working all winter designing new projects and landscape renovations. This is the season where everything comes together.

“Right now, I’m overseeing many of the projects I sold in March and April,” explains Carolyn. “Our crews will be busy implementing the designs, and I’ll be helping to make sure it all looks great.”

The favorite part of Carolyn’s job is the before and after. “I love coming up to a house that has absolutely terrible landscaping and transforming the yard into something really beautiful,” she says.

“I have a customer who had the same landscape for 30-plus years. The shrubs were so big all along the front walk you couldn’t see the front door.” For that job, the plants around the entire foundation of the house were removed. New plants that complement the house were installed to give everything a fresh look.

“The yard was renovated in a couple of phases. Now, the landscape has color and is not completely overgrown,” says Carolyn. “It’s really beautiful.”

Another memorable project for Carolyn is the Tessier residence, which earned Carolyn a Silver Award from the Michigan Green Industry Association in 2017.

“The customers wanted to refresh their front yard,” she explains. “We decided the only plant that would remain was a Weeping Red Japanese Maple. We added plants for spring and summer color, and evergreens for winter interest. It is a huge improvement.”

Carolyn has two extended associate’s degrees from Oakland Community College – one in Landscape Design and a second in Horticulture.

“I love to garden and would always be outside in the summer pulling weeds and planting flowers,” she says. “In high school, I decided to make a career of doing this for other people. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
