Did you know that Fall is a great time for planting? With cooler air temperatures and soil that is still warm from the summer heat, plants can thrive in autumn conditions.
Planting in the fall will give your plants a head start come spring. Warm soil and cool air help plant roots begin to grow, and will allow the plant to have a spring growth surge once warmer weather begins. Your plants will be ready for top growth because they have been establishing a large root system all winter. Plants should be in the ground about four weeks before the ground freezes to help those roots dig in.
It is easier to keep your plants watered in the fall. With moderate temperatures there is less heat stress on plants. Continue to water and monitor your new plantings like you would normally until the ground freezes.
Other advantages to fall planting include: Less insect and disease damage happening in the fall. There is less stress on the plants allowing them to root better.
Planting in the fall helps your plants be more drought tolerant during those hot summer months. Because they have had more time to root and store nutrients, they are better prepared for droughts.
And lastly, it is much more pleasant on you. Digging holes is much more enjoyable when the temperatures aren’t in the 90s or the ground is soaked from Spring rains.
You may not see much top growth during the fall, but those roots are digging in for the winter. And plants will be ready to thrive when spring hits. Plant this fall, and enjoy your beautiful new garden in the Spring.
