Fresh aromatic greens, garlands and wreaths are a staple in Christmas decorating. English Gardens stores feature a large assortment of fresh Christmas products to decorate indoors or outdoors.
Most varieties can be used indoors or outdoors. New this year: German Boxwood is a great choice for either area. Holly is best used indoors only. If it’s on a door wreath, protect it from freezing temperatures by displaying it behind a storm door or glass door.
Here are a few tips to keep them fresh throughout the season.
Outdoors
Evergreens like cool temperatures and shade, so outdoor winter weather is perfect for them.
Whether it’s an evergreen porch pot or decorative garlands and wreaths, an application of Wilt-stop will help prolong their freshness. If fresh greens are in a sunny location or the temperatures rise above 40 degrees F, an occasional mist of water will help preserve their freshness.
Indoors
Fresh wreaths and garlands bring the scent of the holidays indoors. Go “all in” with fresh roping draped across the mantel or staircases. Hang a wreath above the fireplace, or create a table centerpiece with a variety of fresh greens mixed with flowers and candles.
To keep greens fresher longer, spray them completely with Wilt-stop before hanging them. Once hung, greens should be touched as little as possible to prevent them from shedding needles.
DECORATING TIP: Incorporate small bundles of greens into your life-like wreath or garland for a fresh holiday scent.
Using Wilt-stop
It is best to spray Wilt-stop outdoors. It works best in above freezing temperatures. If it’s below 32 degrees F, use the garage or covered space as a prep area. Lay a sheet down on the lawn or concrete. Spray both sides completely and allow to dry before hanging or bringing them indoors.
