Summer is winding down and school will be back in session soon. Help yourself stay healthy by adding plants to your home or office space. These plants will improve air quality, but they add texture and color to your decor. Plus, they’re really easy to take care of.
Here are our top picks for this month.
Dieffenbachia
Dieffenbachia is a popular house plant that likes brightly lit, warm and humid locations, making them great for a well-lit bathroom. They prefer moist soil, but if in doubt, let them dry out between waterings to prevent soggy soil. They remove toxins from the air to help keep you healthier. Dieffenbachia come in varying shades of green and yellow, and grow upright, making them great accent plants for corners.
Anthurium
Anthuriums are beautiful flowering plants that add pops of color to your indoor decor. The deep green foliage is accented by red, pink or white spaths. Anthuriums like brightly lit areas, away from direct sunlight. If given proper light, Anthuriums can bloom all year. Water thoroughly, but allow to dry out slightly between waterings. Make sure to deadhead spent blooms to keep your plant looking its best. Anthuriums are great at removing formaldehyde and ammonia from the air.
Croton
Crotons are one of the most colorful non-flowering plants you can own. The leaves come in variations from red to yellow to green. The brighter the light, the more color variation on the leaves. Water your Croton often to keep the soil moist, and mist the leaves — these plants love high-humidity areas. Crotons are great at removing volatile organic compounds from the air.
Hoya
Hoya is a type of indoor vine that are slow growing, and great for almost any indoor condition. It bright light, Hoyas can produce pink flowers. In lower lighting conditions, it will keep its green foliage. Hoyas prefer dry soil, so let it dry completely between waterings. They clean the air of everyday pollutants, making allergies and asthma less severe.
