Although summer gardening is coming to an end for some, the benefits of plant care have just begun at Spectrum Juvenile Justice Services (SJJS). Earlier this year, Jade Frederick, the Center’s Clinical Services Manager, explained the plant therapy program for incarcerated youth that English Gardens is helping to support. The purpose of this program is to rehabilitate both the minds and hearts of their residents.
Every month, new youth at SJJS have had the opportunity to plant their own houseplant and they have definitely been enjoying this experience! One youth in particular has found great therapeutic benefits involved with his plant’s care. He has allowed us to interview him about his experience:
What do you like about plant care?
Honestly the plant and I have a lot in common. I would like to thank English Gardens for donating these plants to help up show attachment and loss.
How has plant care helped you succeed?
My plant needed a lot of love and assurance to grow the way it is. It takes time and patience.
How have you been taking care of your plant?
If you don’t know how to keep the branches from tangling up, then you should at least tie them up.
What advice do you have for your peers about plant care?
Sit back and be satisfied with your finished product. Not all plants grow the same and some take longer than others.
Stay tuned for more on the plant care project with English Gardens at SJJS!
