African Violets

African Violets have been a popular house plant for more than 100  years. These petite plants have green, fuzzy foliage, and a pop of pink, purple or white flowers. In the wild, African Violets grow between the roots of trees in the rainforests of eastern Africa.

Pro-Tip

African Violets need at least 8 hours of darkness a day to produces blooms.

Light

African Violets need bright light to bloom. Keeping them within 2 feet of a south, west or east-facing window should provide enough light to keep them happy.

If you are not able to keep them near a window, you can use a grow light to keep them happy. African Violets do very well with 14 hours under the light with 10 hours of darkness. Set your light 12-15 inches above your plant for best results.

Rotate your plant a quarter turn every week for even blooming.

Water

Water your African Violets when the top several inches are dry. The pot may feel lighter and the soil may be a "paper brown bag" color. Water thoroughly until water runs from the bottom of the pot. Do not allow the leaves to get wet, as this can cause spotting.

Pro-Tip

Avoid using cold water on your African Violets. They prefer room temperature water to prevent them from being shocked.

If bottom watering, do not let the plant sit in water for longer than 30 minutes.

Fertilizer

African Violets need to be fertilized all year long in order to produce blooms. Use a liquid African Violet fertilizer at one-quarter strength each time you water.
