Bird of Paradise

Bird of Paradise is the perfect low-maintenance addition to your home. Originally from Southern Africa, this tropical plant has beautiful large foliage and blooms bright orange flowers that resemble the bird of its namesake. Outdoors these plants grow to over 20-feet tall! Indoors they can reach around 8 feet in the right conditions.
Light
Bird of Paradise thrives with at least 4 hours of bright light a day. Placing them near a Southern, Eastern or Western facing window should provide enough adequate light to keep them thriving. Though they can tolerate medium lighting conditions, they will do the best long term with bright light. They even love a bit of direct sunlight.
High humidity will also keep your plant at its happiest. Keep it away from air vents and drafts. If you notice leaves turning brown, new growth that won't unfurl, or leaves that are splitting, your plant needs to be moved to a sunnier location.
Water
Check your plant daily when you first bring it home to assess how much water it is taking in in its environment. Push your finger into the soil up to the first knuckle to test the moisture level. Bird of Paradise prefer moist soil, but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out before watering, but do not let the soil dry out completely. Water until the top layer is moist.
Avoid over watering or soaking the soil. If your plant is droopy or the leaf edges are turning brown, your plant is being overwatered. This is especially common in the winter months, when growth slows, or if your plant isn't receiving enough light. Dry, crispy or brittle leaves means your plant is being under-watered.
Fertilizer
Bird of Paradise plants are heavy feeders and require feeding every two weeks spring through fall which is their active growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer and follow the package instructions. Only fertilize once a month in the winter.
