Calathea

The Calathea is a popular house plant often known for its unique variegation. The tops of the foliage are usually patterned in shades of green, while the underside is a deep red or purple. Calathea plants have several varieties that go by different names. Some popular ones are Prayer Plant, Zebra Plant and Rattlesnake Plant.

Light

Native to the floor of the tropical rainforest, Calathea plants are used to filtered light. They cannot tolerate bright light, so keep your plant in an area with bright, indirect light for best results.

Calathea plants can tolerate some shade, but their leaf's variegation will start to fade over time if not given enough light.

Water

Calathea plants prefer to have consistently moist (not wet!) soil. Ideally, give your plant a little water often rather than watering it deeply less often.

Calathea Plants need high humidity to thrive. Be sure you are misting your plant daily, have it on a humidity try or near a humidifier to keep it happy. These plants are great for a bright bathroom.

Fertilizer

Calatheas need regular feedings. Use a half-strength house plant fertilizer every two weeks during the spring and summer. Do not fertilize during the fall and winter.
