It’s time to start thinking about your veggie and herb garden plan for the year.
We thought we would try to start seeds inside. This project totally brought tears to my eyes thinking about how my grandpa used to do this every year. He would bring out his tin coffee can of seeds and see what he had to plant, mainly starting tomatoes inside early.
Little Miss, our neighbor friends and I had a fun outdoor activity of planting “matoe” seeds the other day. The girls loved getting their hands wet and pushing all the peat pellets into a pan of water to hydrate them.
I thought this would take a lot longer to do but they were filled up with water within minutes and ready for poking with seeds. Once we put the peat pellets in the tray they each got a row to “sow their own seeds”. Needless to say some peat pellets received more seeds than others. It was so fun to watch them poke the holes and drop the seeds in.
If you do this with multiple varieties of plants, I would recommend separating the pellets into different containers. We aren’t sure which tomatoes are which but that’s not really important to us.
We’re using a seed heating mat to quicken the germination time, and boy did it! They were up out of the soil in about 5 days. Little Miss sees the greenhouse on the window sill and says “My Matoes”.
I can’t wait until the plants get a little bigger and we can plant a garden with our neighbors.
