Mosquitoes — summer is the prime time for these fun-suckers. Take back your backyard with these options from English Gardens!
Natural Remedies
Citronella is the best way to naturally repel mosquitoes. The actual citronella plant is easy to care for or decorate your patio and garden with citronella candles and torches.
Other plants that deter mosquitoes include mint, rosemary and lemon grass.
Mosquito Barrier
Mosquito Barrier is an all-natural garlic spray. “Spray it on anything green at dusk to kill any adult mosquitoes on contact,” says Dean Darin, English Gardens Store Director and bona fide mosquito-hater. “Plants absorb it to repel mosquitoes for up to a month.”
Prevention
Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water and bright lights. Reduce standing water in your backyard, and you’ll reduce the number of places mosquitoes can breed. Additionally you can replace outdoor, white light bulbs with dimmer yellow ones.
Mosquito Dunks
If you can’t avoid standing water in your backyard, try Mosquito Dunks! This nifty product kills mosquitoes before they’re old enough to bite. It can kill larvae for up to 30 days and treats 100 square feet of water surface area.
Repellants
Your local English Gardens carries several different mosquito repellant options, as well! The Cutter Backwoods Insect Repellant provides up to 10 hours of protection against mosquitoes. It is also sweat resistant! Sterling Rescue Mosquito Go Clips can go anywhere and help repel mosquitoes, ticks and biting flies.
Fun Facts
As much as we all despise mosquitoes, they can be interesting creatures. The American Mosquito Control Association has provided fun facts that could help reduce the amount of mosquitoes in your backyard:
- Smelly feet are attractive to certain species of mosquitoes.
- Dark clothing has been shown to attract some species of mosquitoes more than lighter colored clothing.
- Movement increased mosquito biting up to 50% in some research tests.
- A full moon increased mosquito activity by 500% in one study.
