Gardening pros and novices alike went wild when Pantone’s Color Institute named Greenery its color of the year. A yellow-green hue, Greenery fits perfectly into the world of plants. “Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s executive director. We’ve gathered inspiration on how to decorate with it during the holidays.
Christmas Cactus: The biggest paradox, Christmas Cacti feature wildly beautiful red and pink blooms on top of Greenery-inspired stems. Once the Christmas Cactus has ceased flowering, usually by fall, and when you want the plant to rebloom, allow it to enter a dormancy period. To do this cut back on moisture and ensure the plant receives 12-14 hours of darkness. During the winter, put the Christmas Cactus in a location where it will receive four to six hours of indirect sunlight. Maintain soil moisture, as well.
Amaryllis: The perfect gift for the holidays, Amaryllis bloom large bell-shaped flowers propped upon stems the color of Greenery. Enjoy your Amaryllis for an extended period of time by placing it in a cool indoor location.
Paperwhites: Aptly named, Paperwhites feature white blooms on Greenery-colored stems. Plant bulbs in mid-October to enjoy holiday color. Bulbs typically bloom in 8 to 10 weeks.
Evergreen Container Garden: With the right planning, you can transition some of your outdoor decorations to reflect the holiday spirit. As the temperatures get colder, start adding evergreen braches that are similar in color to Pantone’s Greenery. Additionally, decorate with lights, branches, ornaments and pine cones.
Floral Centerpiece: Match your holiday décor with a Pantone Greenery inspired fresh-cut flower centerpiece. Red roses mix well with yellow-green mums and foliage.
