What Material is Right For Me
Outdoor furniture is made to withstand the elements. Choosing the right material will increase the longevity of your furniture and keep it looking great year after year.
Cast Aluminum
Cast Aluminum is the most popular choice for patio furniture. Constructed from tubular aluminum, these sets are strong and lightweight. Finished with a powder coating makes them weather and rust-resistant. Even wicker furniture is made with an aluminum frame. Cast Aluminum cleans easily with soap and water and requires minimal maintenance.
All-Weather Wicker
All-Weather Wicker is a resin synthetic material woven over an aluminum frame. It can be used indoors or out to create a coastal look, while being lightweight, flexible and comfortable. The resin is water-resistant, durable and won’t fade in the sun. Wicker cleans easily with soap and water and is low maintenance.
Wrought Iron
Wrought Iron is made from heavy duty iron and coated in a weather-resistant finish. The biggest appeal to wrought iron is its sturdiness. This material can withstand the elements but is heavy. It also needs to be protected from rust. Wrought iron comes in a variety of sizes and styles. Clean wrought iron with light soap and water, and seal any rust spots with protective paint after cleaning.
Wood
Wood is a timeless material that looks great in any space. Woods like teak, pine, cedar, and eucalyptus are best for outdoor furniture. These varieties won’t warp or rot in sun or rain. Eucalyptus is an economical choice, while teak and cedar will be more expensive. Protect wood furniture with a preservative, or paint with a UV barrier paint to protect from fading. It does require more maintenance than other materials and can turn gray if not properly protected.
Plastic
Plastic furniture is made from recycled materials and is durable and inexpensive. Plastic furniture can be designed to look like other materials like wicker or wood. It can be heavier than other materials, but can withstand sun and heat exposure, and rain and even snow! Clean with soap and water to prevent mildew from forming.
Protect your furniture when it’s not in use. Use furniture covers for large pieces and store cushions in storage containers. This will keep your furniture in great shape year after year.
