Outdoor Rooms
Taking advantage of warm weather usually involves sitting outside with friends and family. Create a comfortable and welcoming outdoor living space and you’ll gain an additional room to your home! Here’s a few tips to create an outdoor space:
The outdoor room should contain all the elements of an indoor room: floor, walls and ceiling.
Walls
- Evergreens, shrubs, a fence or trellis define the boundary or walls of the outdoor room.
- Vertical elements can be used to frame your view, leading your eye to a focal point in the garden. Likewise, they can also screen an unwanted view, like the back of a neighbor’s garage, and add privacy.
- Use a combination of evergreens and deciduous plant material to bring lots of seasonal interest to the yard.
- Arborvitae, ninebark and hydrangea all provide coverage, and offer color from foliage and flowers, and beautiful winter interest. Other recommended plants include: Norway Spruce, Red Sunset Maple, Mohican Viburnum, and Weigela.
Ceiling
- Overhead structures such as a pergola, arbor or the canopy of trees become the ceiling.
Floors
- Brick pavers are great, because maintenance is minimal. Brick pavers require no annual sealing. Unlike concrete materials, if settling occurs, they’re easily reset to their original level. Replacement of the original paving stone is usually not necessary.
- Brick pavers provide great drainage when compared to traditional paving. And the space can be used immediately after installation.
- English Gardens Landscape Company designs many patios from brick pavers. They’re available in a wide variety of colors, sizes and textures that will fit any design or style you’re hoping to achieve. Plus, they’re a great way to add value to your home.
Once the room is defined, select the right furniture for the room’s function: Dining, entertaining or just relaxing. You might even need a combination of all three types, depending on how you’ll use the space.
Finally, be sure to accessorize. Add container gardens filled with plants and flowers. Consider a fountain for the relaxing sound of water. Add lights, a statue, candles or torches, or even bird houses or feeders to attract wildlife.
