The Serbian Spruce is often overlooked as an evergreen option. However, it’s a favorite among our landscape designers.
Its narrow profile is one of its many features. It’s also very hardy, and features a pyramidal shape that will eventually grow nearly 60 feet tall, and 20 feet wide. Despite its full-grown potential, the Serbian Spruce is considered a moderate grower, putting on roughly 12” of new growth per year.
The Serbian Spruce stands out from other evergreen varieties for several reasons. From afar, some say it has an “airy” appearance. However, up close you’ll realize it’s quite dense and has a relatively fine texture.
The needles are more flat, resembling a Hemlock tree. The foliage is a dark green color with a silver underside, which is light green in the spring. Lastly, the smooth red bark has a nice contrast against other plants.
The Serbian Spruce grows best in full sun, but can handle a little bit of shade. However, if the tree has too much shade, it will thin out and not be as attractive.
Plant this tree in rich, well-drained soil. It will not survive in standing water.
Serbian Spruce is a great evergreen that works well in many landscapes.
