Spring is very colorful season, with trees and gardens coming alive. Two of our favorite spring-flowering plants: Serviceberry Trees and Bleeding Heart perennials.

Serviceberry
This ornamental tree is a naturally beautiful small tree, ideal for home landscapes. The Serviceberry is very versatile and great in all seasons with masses of showy white flowers in spring, edible berries in June, amazing orange/red fall color and interesting branching for the winter. Reaching a maximum height of 15-20 feet tall, with a spread of 15 feet, the Serviceberry is perfect as a front yard focal point.

It grows best in full sun to part shade. And, it’s great for nature lovers, as this tree will be sure to attract many birds!

Bleeding Heart
There are two different varieties of bleeding heart: Fringed and Old Fashioned. The plant is named for its beloved dangling heart-shaped flowers.

The Old Fashioned blooms first, usually in late spring to early summer. It dies back once the heat of summer arrives.

These old-time perennials love the shade and produce a spectacular array of tall wands lined with dangling blossoms. They spread in loose moist soil into larger clumps. This is an excellent plant for the shaded border or as a cut flower.
