Fall is for planting, and now is the time to plant those spring-flowering bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, to add color to your garden next spring.
It’s also possible to force bulbs indoors to enjoy this winter. We planted a variety of bulbs in a container using a layering method. Once planted, we’re storing it in a refrigerator for several months to force the bulbs into blossom.
This video explains how to make this “bulb lasagna” in a container.
The lasagna or layered technique can also be used in the garden to create a unique bouquet of flowers that you can enjoy all spring and into the summer. Select bulbs that bloom at different times. Typically, the larger the bulb, the later it will bloom.
Plant large bulbs at the bottom, layering medium in the middle, and smaller bulbs at the top.
Here are some tips when planting your bulbs in the garden this fall.
Be sure to plant them 3 times the depth of the bulb. So, a 3-inch tulip bulb should be planted roughly 9 inches deep.
For best results, use a premium potting soil like Proven Winners, and bulb food such as Espoma’s organic Bulb-tone. This will ensure your bulbs get the nutrients they need over the winter and into the spring.
To prevent critters from digging up your newly planted bulbs, consider sprinkling Neptune’s Harvest around the area. The Crab and Lobster Shell mix is rough on little paws and naturally deters them.
