There’s no doubt rainfall is down this summer. We can see it in the grass alongside the road and in everyone’s landscape who isn’t applying supplemental water regularly. More than likely, if your garden isn’t looking great right now, it’s due to lack of water.
During period of abnormally dry weather, it’s important to water everyday. This is especially important for anything that was planted this year.
Even well-established plants – trees, shrubs and perennials – will need to be watered every day, if it doesn’t rain. They may take a little long to show the stressful signs of lack of water, but eventually they may suffer die back or go dormant prematurely for the season.
During this period of little to no rainfall, we recommend increasing the times the zones run on your sprinkler system by about 20%.
However, watering with sprinklers alone may not be sufficient for newly planted trees and shrubs. Hand watering may be necessary for some flowering plants, like hydrangeas.
Be sure to water daily to keep the plants and garden looking its best.
