It’s easy to give your container gardens a fresh look every season.
We have a few large containers in front of our office. They were planted early in Spring – a welcome site after a dreary winter.
Unfortunately, the cool-season pansies were beginning to wilt, but the cabbage and pussy willow branches were still growing strong. With a few new plants and about 10 minutes, we transformed the garden and gave it a fresh look for summer. Many thanks to Silvia Buse of our West Bloomfield store.
Here’s a step-by-step guide for a seasonal refresh.
1. Remove the old flowers.
Our pansies were beginning to wilt, so we took out the plants – roots and all.
2. Add new soil.
Removing the plants, left a few holes, so we added new Proven Winners Potting Soil. Be sure to use a soil that’s specifically formulated for containers. Garden soil is too heavy for pots.
3. Add fertilizer.
We added Miracle-Gro’s Shake-N-Feed Continuous Release All-Purpose Plant Food. Simply, pour some plant food on top of the soil (always follow manufacturer’s instructions.)
4. Plant the new flowers.
We added three different varieties of plants: PW White Knight Lobularia, PW Diamond Frost Euphorbia, and Ivy. We alternated the plants so the container looks great from all angles.
5. Water thoroughly.
VOILA! You have a refreshed container garden.
Fresh shipments of annuals arrive throughout the summer. It’s a great time to give your pots a summer refresh.
