House plants are a top trend right now. Given their health benefits and easy care, it’s easy to see why. Here are our top picks for low-maintenance houseplants.
Bird of Paradise
Bird of Paradise are the perfect low-maintenance addition to your home. With their large leaves, and tropical look, these plants add a touch of the tropics. They love direct sunlight and high humidity, but will do well in just about any home. Water weekly, and allow the first few inches of soil to dry out between waterings. The plant will droop and the leaves will curl if it is not getting enough water.
Cactus
Cactus are a popular house plant and the ultimate in low-maintenance. Available in many sizes, shapes and colors, these are perfect plants for the first-time plant parent. Cactus like lots of sun, but not direct sun-light. Keep them near a south facing window, or outdoors in a bright spot away from direct sun. You plant will become leggy (stretched out) if it isn’t getting proper light. Green succulents can tolerate lower lighting conditions than pinks, purples and whites. Water once a week, or when the soil dries out.
Aloe
Aloe Vera is a versatile house plant that is easy to care for. This succulent has fleshy leaves filled with medicinal gel that is great on burns, cuts, and as a skin care product. Place your Aloe plant near a south-facing window, or an area that gets bright, indirect-light. Like other succulents, aloe will start to get leggy if not given enough light. Water every three weeks thoroughly, allowing the water to run through the bottom of the pot. Do not let your plant sit in water, Aloe prefers drier soil.
Philodendron Monstera
Monstera or split leaf philodendrons are a popular house plant that adds some Caribbean flair to your home. These plants come in a variety of sizes and are easy to grow. Monstera like high humidity and bright light, making them great for brightly lit bathrooms and kitchens. Keep them away from direct sunlight, but the brighter the space the better. If your Monstera’s leaves are splitting, then your plant needs more light. Keep Monstera soil moist, but not soggy.
