From patios to sunrooms, from rooftops to backyards—the trend of transforming drab spaces into private tropical oases is on the rise.

“Tropical patio plants don’t require a lot of work and will easily turn any outdoor space into your own tropical oasis,” says Meg Gallagher, English Gardens tropical plant expert. “These fabulous plants are easy to care for and will provide continuous blooms all summer long!”

We took a closer look at two popular patio tropics, the mandevilla and hibiscus, which are guaranteed to brighten any space.

Mandevilla
Mandevillas are sure to make a statement. This fun, tropical vine will produce large, trumpet shaped blooms in a variety of colors.

Providing the correct type of light is the key to ensuring the success of your mandevilla. They require full sun or partial shade in areas of extreme warmth. Avoid wilting by keeping plants moist and hydrated. In order to maintain flowering, fertilize every 10 days to 2 weeks with a water soluble plant food.

As it is a vine, provide support for your mandevilla with a trellis. Continuously wrap the stem around the trellis to encourage new growth and maintain the shape of the mandevilla.

Hibiscus
Hibiscus are known for their large, abundant and colorful blooms. By following the correct plant care instructions, you can enjoy paradise all summer long.

Light is the primary factor affecting the hibiscus’ ever-blooming character. The more natural light the hibiscus receives, the more frequently it flowers. Ensure your hibiscus receives at least four hours of sunshine each day. Place on sunny porches for the best performance.

Although ever-blooming, the individual flowers last only one day after opening. It is natural for blooms to close or roll up and drop right after opening. Thus, making it easier to remove spent blossoms from your plant.

Always keep the root of your hibiscus slightly moist. Water thoroughly by pouring water into the top of the pot until it runs out of the bottom. Do not allow the plant to sit in excess water. Also, never allow the hibiscus to dry out or wilt. This will cause leaf yellowing and flower bud drop.

Fertilize only once with any liquid houseplant fertilizer at half of the suggested amount provided on the label. Osmocote, a slow-release fertilizer, is highly recommended.
