It’s wedding season! The bells are ringing and chapels are filled with happy couples. We spoke with Debbie Purdue, English Gardens Floral Coordinator, about a recent wedding and her tips for couples when selecting wedding flowers.
Describe this wedding in particular, and their floral arrangements.
The bride had a beautiful vision, very romantic and elegant, for her wedding. We started with pale pink roses, loads of Phalaenopsis orchids and an abundance of candles.
A dramatic staircase and a table full of orchids created an impactful entrance to the wedding and served as the perfect spot to take photos. We led guests down the hall with more candles, orchids and lush ivy topiaries that stood at 5’ tall.
Dining tables were adorned with high and low centerpieces. The tall centerpieces were full and lush atop glass vases and surrounded by candles. The low arrangements were built in a square with tiered candles in the center. The room was glowing with all the candlelight!
What was your favorite part of working on this wedding?
As with any wedding, the best part is creating the couple’s dream wedding. There is nothing more gratifying than the look on the bride’s and families’ faces when they see the initial design come to life. Our goal is to exceed expectations.
What suggestions do you have for couples looking to hire a florist for their wedding?
We really get to know our clients and work hard to understand and create their vision. However, it all about trusting and knowing that your ideas are understood. My suggestion is to get to know your designer and feel comfortable with them. If you trust them, you will see your dream come to life.
Where do you suggest clients look for inspiration?
Everywhere! Pinterest, television, magazines, other weddings, the list goes on!
With that said, it is also very dangerous. You may have a lower budget but fall in love with numerous ideas. The price of a wedding can change drastically based on the flowers. Therefore, remember to be flexible, show your ideas and explain to the designer what you are attracted to. A good designer can suggest how to get a similar look within your budget.
What if a client doesn’t know very much about flowers?
We love these customers! After meeting with the bride and seeing her dress, the venue and other wedding details, we can give our ideas that would complement what she has started. We can suggest colors and designs that will complete the wedding!
